Synopsis:

In 18th-century Italy, a duke is being slowly poisoned by his treacherous advisor, Count Astolfo. The duke's son, Marco, and his friend, Andrea, are returning home with documentary proof of the count's treachery but are captured; Marco is put into an iron mask but not before he has hidden the document. Andrea, who has escaped, thinking that Marco has been killed, rescues him as he is being exiled from the country. Marco's sister, to save her brother's life, has consented to marry the count. After being defeated in a duel by Marco, the count is put into the iron mask and sent to the battle field where the French are awaiting him.
